And so it begins...

Tonight was freshman orientation at the local suburban high school. I think I must be in shock. Shouldn't I be having a sobbing fit or eating a gallon of ice cream, or maybe just lying in a fetal position on the floor? Instead, I'm just sorta numb.

My little girl is a freshman. In high school. With big kids. Boys with cars and muscles and facial hair and all that. Girls who look like they're 21 already. This is weird.

I could go on with the usual "it was only yesterday that she started kindergarten..." blah blah blah, but why bother? Like having time fly by is an experience unique to ME or something. I'm not going to bore everyone with how adorable she was on her first day of kindergarten, or how we used to dress her up on the first day of school and take a picture in the front yard. Everyone does that, or most everyone who will be reading this anyway.

Instead, I think I'll use this blog space to clue all everyone in on what I see, hear, spy on, etc. and give the world that doesn't have a teenager-in-suburbia a taste of what it's like these days.

For the record, I'm a suburban h.s. grad myself, just down the road in Carrollton/Farmers Branch, Texas - class of 1983. I was a trumpet player/punk rocker type that loved school and all my friends (whom I still see regularly). I'm not stuck in the 80's but I have to admit that some of our music was WAAAAAY better than stuff today. Okay, so maybe not Loverboy or Men At Work, but The Clash, old U2, The Police, even Culture Club was pretty decent stuff.

I hope that other parents from the area chime in and give their stories, too. Our kids are a tight bunch, and they're really good kids - the kind that really don't mind their parents hanging around. Yet. I'm sure that will change.

So, sit back and hear the tales of today's high school experiences... maybe I'll be the next Cameron Crowe, he he.
